SPORT – A lifetime activity
When we were small children, we begin to discover our body, to move around, walking from our mother’s arms to our father’s, we start to play and enjoy movement.
Moving is like testing ourselves. Based on this concept, sport is an instrument for self-knowledge and, consequently, it contributes to human development. Therefore, it becomes a true lifetime activity.
TENNIS – “An ongoing on Chess game”
Throughout history, the art of movement and sport has been translated into various activities, which can bring lots of pleasure and a quick development of perceptions.
When playing tennis, the body’s development is directly connected to the development of the mind. It is all about knowing the limits of your body and mind, having simultaneous control, and keeping track of the other aspects inherent to the game, as well. Tennis is an “ongoing chess game”.

Raw Tennis – Tennis for life
A fine structure and good coaches make a good tennis school. However, an IDEAL ENVIRONMENT is what really makes the difference. This is what we are constantly looking for. We are proud of having the best structure and the best coaches. We are proud, however, at providing a continuously improving technical and physical environment that contributes to what really counts, human development!
Dear Tennis Community in Brazil,
My name is Luciano Battaglini and I am currently the Head of Women's tennis and Assistant
Professor in Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation at Carleton College in Northfield,
Minnesota. For the past 15 years I have lived in the United States where I competed in the
collegiate level and I currently coach and teach classes at the University level. During the
past years, I have had the opportunity to travel to many countries around the world (Iceland,
Germany, Holland, Check Republic, Italy, Sweden, and Mozambique; to name a few) where
I worked with many tennis players and coaches and I also taught sport psychology and sport
Sociology. I wanted to let you know that Edison Raw has been a great mentor to me (on and off
the court) and I am writing you a brief summary of Carleton College and what we have to offer.
Academically
Carleton College is ranked amongst the top 10 most prestigious Colleges of Liberal Arts in
the United States. Our College offers more than 50 study areas, and all our students have the
opportunity to study abroad during their college career. In addition, most of our students
proceed with their education by enrolling in Master's and PhD's program across the country.
Tennis
Carleton College is currently ranked in the top 30 in the nation. During the past 3 years, our
women's team has qualified to several National Championships. In the 2009-2010 season, our
team was the Conference runner-up (2nd place) and had an overall team record of 12-6.
The city of Northfield
Carleton College is located in Northfield, Minnesota and is very close to the city of Minneapolis/
Saint Paul (45 minutes driving). Recently, Minneapolis/Saint Paul was ranked as the second
most artistic city in the country (behind New York City only). As a student in Minnesota,
students will enjoy a social life that includes many musical shows (Prince and Bob Dylan are
permanent residents of Minneapolis!), theatrical plays, and a great variety of professional sport
events (Basketball-NBA, football, Hockey, Baseball, American football, gymnastic, etc.).
Minnesota is truly a beautiful place and if you ever have any questions about the collegiate
system in the U.S, please do not hesitate in contact me. I wish everyone a great tennis career and
a lot of success in the near future!
Sincerely,
Luciano Battaglini
